Best Places to SUP & Kayak in Christchurch: Paddle the Garden City

Christchurch might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of water sports, but the Garden City has some genuinely brilliant paddling on offer.

The Avon River winding through the city, the coastal lagoons of the Estuary, the Banks Peninsula's sheltered bays and there's something for every paddler here.

Here's your guide to the best SUP and kayaking spots in and around Ōtautahi Christchurch.

1. The Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor

The Avon River flowing through central Christchurch is one of the most unique urban paddling experiences in New Zealand. Post-earthquake, the red zone along the river has been transformed into a stunning green corridor and paddling through it by SUP or kayak gives you a completely different perspective on the city's regeneration.

       Skill level: Beginner

Best for: Scenic city paddles, families, photographers

Launch point: Victoria Lake or the city end near Antigua Boatsheds

💡 Did you know?  The Antigua Boatsheds near Hagley Park are one of Christchurch's oldest landmarks - a perfect backdrop for your morning SUP session.

2. Lake Roto Kohatu (McLeans Island)

A hidden gem just 10 minutes northwest of the city, Lake Roto Kohatu is a calm, shallow lake perfect for beginner paddlers and families. The surrounding wetlands make it a beautiful nature escape without leaving Greater Christchurch. Early mornings here are magical with mist on the water and herons wading at the edges.

       Skill level: Beginner

Best for: Flat-water SUP, families, wildlife spotting

Facilities: Parking and easy beach launch access

3. Waimak Gorge & Waimakariri River

For more adventurous paddlers, the Waimakariri River offers exciting flat-water sections for inflatable kayaking. The scenery is dramatic and braided river channels, distant Southern Alps, and wide-open sky. Stick to the calmer sections at the lower river near Kaiapoi for a more relaxed experience.

       Skill level: Intermediate to advanced

Best for: River kayaking, adventure paddling

Best section: Lower Waimakariri near Kaiapoi for calmer conditions

4. Lyttelton Harbour, Banks Peninsula

A 20-minute drive over the Port Hills and you're at Lyttelton Harbour, one of the most spectacular paddling locations in the South Island. The drowned volcanic crater creates a naturally sheltered harbour with deep, clear water, rocky coves to explore, and charming Lyttelton village to return to for post-paddle pizza.

       Skill level: Intermediate

Best for: Coastal exploring, harbour SUP, kayaking

Highlight: Paddles around the inner harbour with views of the Port Hills

5. Akaroa Harbour, Banks Peninsula

Akaroa is arguably the most beautiful paddling destination in Canterbury. The long, sheltered harbour is flanked by towering hills, little French-inspired baches, and crystal-clear water. It's also home to the world's rarest dolphin, the Hector's dolphin. So you might have company on your paddle.

       Skill level: Beginner to intermediate

Best for: Full-day adventures, kayaking, wildlife encounters

Drive from Christchurch: Approx. 1.5 hours

🐬 Wildlife alert:  Hector's dolphins are endemic to New Zealand - keep a respectful distance and enjoy the experience if they approach!

6. New Brighton Beach & Coastal Lagoons

The coastal lagoons near New Brighton offer sheltered, flat paddling right on Christchurch's eastern edge. The estuary areas around the Avon-Heathcote are great for easy SUP touring and just mind the tidal flows and launch on an incoming tide for best conditions.

       Skill level: Beginner

Best for: Easy coastal paddling, birdwatching

Tidal note: Check tide times and launch on incoming tide for easier paddling

Seasonal Tips for Christchurch Paddlers

Christchurch has four distinct seasons, all of which can be great for paddling with the right preparation:

Summer (Dec–Feb): Best all-round conditions, warm water, long evenings

Autumn (Mar–May): Often the calmest winds, beautiful golden light

Winter (Jun–Aug): Cold but magical on frosty still mornings - dress in a wetsuit!

Spring (Sep–Nov): Variable, but great on calm days; watch for afternoon nor'westers
