How to Deflate and Pack Down Your Inflatable SUP Board

After a brilliant session on the water, packing down your inflatable SUP correctly is just as important as inflation. Done right, your board deflates quickly, rolls up compactly, and slips back into its bag ready for next time. Done wrong, you end up with a lumpy roll that won't fit in the bag and stresses the seams.

Here's how to deflate and pack your Aqua Marina iSUP properly every time.

Before You Deflate

Rinse the board with fresh water to remove salt, sand, and sunscreen

Allow the board to dry in the shade, or at least wipe it down with a towel

Remove your fins and store them separately to avoid damage during rolling

Loosen or remove the leash from the leash plug

Step-by-Step: Deflating Your iSUP

Step 1: Open the Valve to Release Air

Locate the inflation valve near the tail of the board. Remove the valve cap. To open the valve for deflation, press the valve pin down and turn it counterclockwise, it will lock in the OPEN/DOWN position and air will begin to escape.

💡 Tip:  You'll hear a satisfying rush of air as the pressure releases. Stand back slightly as it can be quite forceful at first!

Step 2: Push Out Remaining Air

Once the initial pressure has escaped, the board will still have residual air inside. Start at the nose of the board and fold it toward the tail, pressing down firmly as you go to push the remaining air out through the open valve.

Work from nose to tail in sections

Use your knees and body weight to press air toward the valve

The more thoroughly you do this step, the easier rolling will be

Step 3: Fold the Board in Half Lengthways (Optional)

For boards wider than 30 inches, folding lengthways first makes for a tighter, more compact roll. Fold the rails inward so the deck faces outward, creating a long narrow strip.

Step 4: Roll from Nose to Tail

Starting at the nose (front) of the board, begin rolling tightly toward the tail where the valve is. Roll as tightly as you can - the tighter the roll, the easier it fits in the bag.

Keep even pressure across the width as you roll

Roll on a clean, flat surface to avoid debris getting trapped inside

Secure the roll with the velcro strap or bungee provided

⚠️ Don't roll too tight:  Extremely tight rolling over years can stress adhesive seams. Firm but not aggressive is the goal.

Step 5: Close the Valve

Before placing the board in the bag, press the valve pin back up to the closed position (turn clockwise) and replace the valve cap. This keeps moisture and debris out of the valve mechanism during storage.

Step 6: Pack into the Board Bag

Place the rolled board into the bag with the valve end going in last (so it's accessible next time). Pack your pump, paddle pieces, fins, and leash in the side pockets. Zip the bag closed and you're done.

Storage Tips After Packing Down

Store in a cool, dry location, not in a hot shed or car boot

Avoid storing under heavy objects that could deform the roll

For long-term storage (weeks+), consider storing partially inflated rather than fully rolled

Keep out of direct sunlight when packed - UV degrades the bag material over time

💡 Did you know?  Aqua Marina bags are designed to fit the board, pump, paddle, and accessories together, so everything stays in one place between sessions.

How Long Does Deflation Take?

Once you've done it a few times, deflating and packing your iSUP takes about 5–8 minutes. The first couple of times might take a bit longer while you get the rolling technique sorted - it gets faster every session.
