Best Places to SUP in Auckland: Your Guide to Paddleboarding on the Water City

Auckland is a paddleboarder's paradise. Surrounded by two harbours, dotted with volcanic islands, and blessed with some of the most stunning coastline in the Southern Hemisphere - there's no better city in New Zealand to hit the water on an inflatable SUP. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned paddler, Auckland has a spot for you.

Here's our pick of the best places to SUP in Auckland, from sheltered harbour bays to island adventures.

1. Okahu Bay, Mission Bay

If you're new to SUP, Okahu Bay is about as beginner-friendly as it gets. The calm, sheltered water sits right on the doorstep of Mission Bay, with easy beach access, cafés nearby for post-paddle flat whites, and stunning views across to Rangitoto Island.

•       Skill level: Beginner to intermediate

•       Best for: Families, first-timers, flat-water cruising

•       Parking: Available at Mission Bay beachfront

💡 Local tip:  Paddle out early morning before the wind picks up - the water is glassy and you'll often spot stingrays below.

2. Devonport Beach, North Shore

Hop on the ferry from downtown Auckland or launch from Devonport directly, either way, the North Shore waterfront offers beautiful calm paddling with iconic views of the Sky Tower and city skyline. The historic village vibe adds a great atmosphere to your pre or post-paddle wander.

•       Skill level: Beginner to intermediate

•       Best for: Scenic paddles, social outings

•       Highlight: Views of the Auckland CBD skyline from the water

3. Waiatarua Reserve, West Auckland

For those who prefer fresh water, the lakes at Waiatarua Reserve in West Auckland offer sheltered, peaceful paddling surrounded by native bush. It's a great escape from the city buzz and perfect for families with kids.

•       Skill level: Beginner

•       Best for: Peaceful nature paddles, wildlife spotting

•       Bonus: Birdlife and native bush scenery

4. Maraetai Beach, East Auckland

Head 45 minutes east of the city and you'll find Maraetai, a quiet seaside village with protected water and views of the Hauraki Gulf islands. Launch from the main beach and paddle towards Waiheke or simply cruise along the coastline - either way it's spectacular.

•       Skill level: Intermediate

•       Best for: Coastal exploring, longer paddling sessions

•       Must-see: Views of Waiheke Island, Ponui, and the Coromandel on clear days

5. Waiheke Island

If you want the full Auckland SUP experience, Onetangi Bay on Waiheke Island is hard to beat. Take the ferry across, inflate your iSUP on the beach, and spend the day exploring crystal-clear water, rocky coves, and kelp forests. It's one of the most memorable paddling experiences in the region.

•       Skill level: Intermediate to advanced (depending on conditions)

•       Best for: Day trips, adventure paddling

•       Getting there: Fullers ferry from downtown Auckland

🌊 Conditions check:  Always check the Metservice wind forecast before heading out on open water around Waiheke. Conditions can change quickly in the Hauraki Gulf.

6. Takapuna Beach, North Shore

One of Auckland's most popular beaches doubles as a great SUP launch spot. Takapuna offers consistent calm conditions in the mornings, a vibrant café scene for post-paddle recovery, and easy board access. It's also a popular spot for SUP yoga classes if you're feeling adventurous.

•       Skill level: Beginner to intermediate

•       Best for: Morning paddles, social outings, SUP yoga

•       Cafés: Some of Auckland's best brunch spots are a 2-minute walk away
